Winters Palette
WHAT THE SEASON TAUGHT MY ART PRACTICE
Winter has a way of slowing everything down — the light, the pace, the breath, the heart. July invited us into that stillness, and I found myself listening more deeply to the colours, textures, and quiet rhythms that winter brings. Winter’s palette is softer, quieter, more contemplative. It doesn’t shout. It whispers. And in those whispers, God often speaks.
The Colours of Winter’s Quiet
Winter in Queensland isn’t harsh, but it is gentle in a way that shifts the palette of my studio. I found myself reaching for:
• Cool greys and soft blues
• Warm neutrals and muted browns
• Sepia tones that feel like old letters
• Pastel pencils that create tender, atmospheric marks
• Water-soluble graphite that moves like winter light
These colours became companions — steady, grounding, honest. They taught me that creativity doesn’t always need to be bright to be beautiful. Sometimes the muted tones carry the deepest stories.
Textures That Hold the Season
Winter textures feel different too. They’re slower, more intentional, more layered. I leaned into:
• Torn vintage papers
• Dried botanicals
• Linen scraps
• Gentle washes of diluted paint
• Soft charcoal smudges
• The quiet scratch of a sepia pen
Winter taught me to let textures breathe — to allow space, softness, and subtlety. Nothing rushed. Nothing forced. Just honest marks made in quiet moments.
What Winter Revealed
Winter’s palette didn’t just shape my art; it shaped my heart. Here’s what the season whispered:
1. Slow is still holy. Winter reminded me that creativity doesn’t need urgency to be meaningful. God works in the slow places.
2. Muted colours still carry light. Even the softest palette can hold hope. Winter’s colours taught me to look for the gentle glimmers.
3. Texture tells truth. The layered, torn, imperfect textures of winter became a metaphor for the layered, tender work God does in us.
4. Quiet is fertile. Winter’s hush isn’t empty — it’s preparing. Beneath the muted tones, new ideas were quietly forming.
A Faith Reflection
Winter’s palette feels like this scripture: “In quietness and trust shall be your strength.” — Isaiah 30:15
Winter strengthens us not through activity, but through stillness. Through listening. Through noticing. Through trusting that God is tending the unseen places.
How Winter Shapes What Comes Next
As we turn toward spring, I carry winter’s palette with me — not to stay in the muted tones, but to honour what they taught me.
Winter prepared my heart. Winter softened my pace. Winter deepened my noticing. Winter made room for spring’s colour to arrive gently.
And now, as August unfolds, I feel the shift — a quiet readiness, a soft reawakening, a palette beginning to warm.
Winter’s palette was the preparation. Spring’s palette will be the promise.
Blessings
Jennifer
