The Art of Noticing

A Creative Faith Practice for August

August is a month of soft beginnings — not quite winter, not quite spring. It’s the in-between, the gentle hinge where the seasons shift almost imperceptibly. And in this tender space, one of the most powerful creative and spiritual practices we can cultivate is noticing. Noticing is slow. Noticing is intentional. Noticing is a form of prayer. It’s the art of paying attention to what God is doing in the quiet corners of our lives and our creativity.

Why Noticing Matters

In a world that rushes, noticing becomes an act of resistance — a way of saying, “I will not hurry past the holy.” It’s a practice that anchors us, softens us, and opens us to the gentle work God is doing beneath the surface. Noticing is how creativity begins. Noticing is how faith deepens. Noticing is how we stay awake to beauty. When we notice, we become present. And presence is where both art and faith flourish.

The Creative Power of Paying Attention

As artists, noticing is our first language. Before we create, we observe. Before we paint, we gather. Before we write, we listen. Noticing is the birthplace of inspiration. In August, when winter’s quiet still lingers and spring’s colour hasn’t yet arrived, noticing becomes a bridge — a way to honour what has been and prepare for what is coming. Here are some of the things I’ve been noticing in my own studio:

• The way winter light softens the edges of everything

• The gentle shift in my palette toward warmer tones

• The textures that feel comforting after months of stillness

• The scriptures that keep rising to the surface

• The small ideas that whisper rather than shout

These tiny observations become seeds — creative, spiritual, emotional. They grow slowly, but they grow faithfully.

A Faith Reflection on Noticing

Scripture invites us into this practice:

“Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10

Stillness is the soil. Knowing is the fruit. Noticing is the bridge between the two. When we notice, we acknowledge God’s presence in the ordinary. We recognise His fingerprints in the small. We honour the quiet ways He speaks. Noticing becomes worship.

A Gentle Noticing Ritual for August

Here’s a simple, soft practice you can try this month — something you can use in your studio, your journal, or your prayer time.

1. Sit somewhere with winter light. A window, a garden corner, your studio table.

2. Choose one thing to notice. A leaf, a colour, a shadow, a scripture, a texture, a memory.

3. Describe it gently. In words, in marks, in a wash of colour, in a fragment of poetry.

4. Ask God what He wants to show you through it. Listen without rushing.

5. Respond creatively. A sketch, a prayer, a collage, a small act of making.

This ritual isn’t about producing something finished. It’s about presence. It’s about tuning your heart to God’s quiet voice and letting creativity flow from that place.

The Gift of Noticing Noticing teaches us that beauty is rarely loud. It teaches us that God often speaks softly. It teaches us that creativity grows in the soil of attention.

As August unfolds, may you notice the small beginnings. May you notice the gentle shifts. May you notice the God-whispers woven through your days. And may the art of noticing become a sacred rhythm — one that prepares your heart for the colour, warmth, and renewal of spring.

Blessings
