Faith in the In Between
Creating When You’re Not Quite Ready
August is an in between month. Not fully winter. Not yet spring. A hinge. A pause. A soft, holy middle. It’s the season where we often feel the stirrings of new ideas, new colours, new beginnings — but we’re not quite ready to leap. Creativity hums quietly. Faith whispers gently. And our hearts sit in that tender space between what was and what will be. The in between can feel uncomfortable. But it is also profoundly sacred.
The Holiness of Almost
There’s a unique kind of faith required in the almost— the place where you can sense God doing something, but you can’t yet see the full shape of it. It’s the season where:
• Ideas feel half-formed
• Energy is returning slowly
• Inspiration flickers rather than burns
• Your hands want to create, but your heart needs a moment
• You feel suspended between rest and renewal
This is not failure. This is formation. The in between is where God prepares us for what’s coming next.
Creativity in the Middle Spaces
As artists, we often want clarity before we begin. We want the palette chosen, the idea defined, the direction confirmed. But creativity rarely works that way and neither does faith.
The in between teaches us to:
• Create without knowing the outcome
• Begin without being fully ready
• Trust the process more than the plan
• Honour the slow return of inspiration
• Let small beginnings be enough. Some of my favourite pieces, both art and writing, began in seasons where I felt unsure, hesitant, or half-awake creatively.
The in between has its own kind of magic.
A Faith Reflection for the In Between
Scripture speaks beautifully to this tender space:
“We walk by faith, not by sight.” — 2 Corinthians 5:7
The in between is where this verse becomes real. It’s where we walk without seeing the full picture. It’s where trust becomes our palette. It’s where God invites us to lean into Him rather than our own certainty. Faith grows in the middle. Creativity grows there too.
A Gentle Creative Practice for the In Between
Here’s a soft, simple practice for the days when you feel suspended between seasons:
1. Begin with one small mark. A line, a wash of colour, a torn paper scrap, a fragment of poetry.
2. Let it be unfinished. Resist the urge to define it. Let it breathe.
3. Ask God to meet you in the uncertainty. A whispered prayer. A quiet moment. A deep breath.
4. Add one more small thing. A second mark. A second word. A second layer.
5. Stop before you feel ready.
This is how we honour the in between... by not rushing past it. This practice isn’t about creating a finished piece. It’s about learning to trust the gentle unfolding.
Encouragement for the Hesitant Heart
If you feel slow, unsure, or not-quite-ready this month, you’re not behind. You’re not failing. You’re not stuck. You’re simply in the in between. The place where God often does His most tender work. The in between is where roots deepen. Where ideas germinate. Where hearts soften. Where faith strengthens. Where creativity quietly returns. Spring will come. Your clarity will come. Your energy will come. Your inspiration will come.
But for now, let the in between be holy.
Blessings
Jennifer
